Virtual Christianity
Virtual Christianity is an extensive collection, with brief commentary, of key resource pages devoted to christianity and study of the Bible. Topics include on-line Bibles, downloadable software, studies and devotionals, reference and commentary, discussion topics and articles, social and interactive sites, and related subjects.
Sub-Pages of Virtual Christianity
If you're viewing this page through the frames interface, then use one of the links over in the frame to the left, rather than one of the corresponding links below, to avoid exiting the frames interface.
- Virtual Christianity - this page, also in frames interface.
- Virtual Christianity: Bibles - A comprehensive list of on-line Bibles, in English and other languages both ancient and modern. Each site featured has a summary of its content and arrangement. The English versions are grouped into categories of multiple translations, King James Version, Revised Standard Version, other versions, and Search utilities.
- Bible Discussion and Sharing - My new site with forums for asking and answering questions about the Bible, sharing your favorite scriptures and parables, and recommending other christian Web sites.
- Virtual Christianity: Software - Links to downloadable software.
- Virtual Christianity: What's New - For a list of the changes to Virtual Christianity.
- Referer Links - Listing of sites with links to this site, ranked by number of hits. Any reasonable site will be included in this Referer Links page if they have a link to the Virtual Christianity site that has been used at least once in the last two months.
Web Search Engine Sub-Page Resource Lists of Christianity
This section contains Christianity Resource Lists that are sub-pages of Web Search
Sites. They are listed roughly in order of my preference, with the more helpful sites at
top. They are great starting points for exploring Christianity on the Internet.
Some extensive links to christian resources, literature, bible studies, and major sites follow below. I've differentiated some of my favorite links by making them bold -- like that, so take special note of those links.
Other Resource Lists of Christianity
Here are some additional places to explore Christianity on the Internet.
- CrossSearch - Formerly Christian Resource List (at Colorado). One of the most popular Web pages for exploration. Highlights a rather broad array of links loosely relating to christianity. Some topics of particular note include the following:
- CrossDaily.com Awesome Christian Sites - Christian search engine and directory. The directory is displayed in groups of ten sites. Categories include Bible, chat, churches, jobs, music, reviews, software, theology, & more. Click here or on the Awesome page to enter without voting.
- Annie's Christian Search Page - Has an extensive list of both christian search engines and regular search engines, good for exploring particular topics based on key words. Annie has many other pages within her home page, which has a lot of good features for children. A good place for an overview is her Directions to My House page.
- Truth and Reason - a well organized resource page. Categories include Evidence for Christianity, Bibles, Biblical Languages, Biblical Manuscripts/Texts, Biblical Archaeology, Bible Studies, General Indexes/Search Engines, Church History, Religions and Denominations, and International churches of Christ.
- In the Footsteps of the Lord - the home page of Binoy Samuel. The Christian Resource Guide, a main sub-page of this site, is notable for the following topics: bible study, apologetics sites, discussion (newsgroups), and more christian pages. This site also includes articles and testimonies, among other things. This site has become infrequently maintained.
Multi-resource Sites
This section contains major christian sites having too many great resources
within them to only list one link.
- Gospel Communications Network - a gathering of on-line christian ministries. Notable for these resources:
- WWW Bible Gateway - English translations include NIV, NIV formatted (NT only), NKJV, RSV, KJV, Darby, and YLT. You can also compare translations for a passage. You can search by passage look-up or word-search. It can also be used in a Web page to reference a scripture, such as Matthew 28:18-20.
- Virtual Christianity: Bibles - can give you examples of links to the WWW Bible Gateway that make it function as a Hypertext Bible, especially under the English Bibles section's "Other Versions" sub-section and in the Foreign Bible section.
- Peggie's Place - This site is a virtual home with 12 different "rooms" each with their own theme or aspect of christianity; adding up to hundreds of links. To avoid confusion in this "a-maze-ing" site on your first visit, I recommend starting with the Peg Leg page, which has an overview/tour for newcomers. All the pages/rooms are long, so be sure to scroll down.
- 10 Reasons to Believe
- Wonderful site. Has a top 10 list of reasons to believe for such topics as the existence of God, life after death, and the Bible.
- GCN Devotionals - daily and weekly Bible devotionals.
- Internet for Christians - a helpful guide for finding Christian resources and considering Christian concerns when exploring the net. I find particularly helpful the following sub-section:
- More Christian Goodies - a good summary of guides to christian resources on the Web in general. Something like an abbreviated version of this Virtual Christianity page.
- Crosswalk.com
- an Internet company building Christian community on the WWW. Provides information for Christians, including the latest headlines in every facet of life. Content arranged into multiple interest channels over various sites. Selected sites follow:
- Not Just Bibles - a team of three people (John Brubaker, Linda Kreitz, and Gary Bogart) who have helped catalogue a lot of useful christian resources on the Internet:
- The NJB Guide to Early Church Documents - a very extensive and well presented group of documents. However, because some of of their links led to sites having documents difficult to view from the Web due to HTML errors, I worked with the team to produce a very similar document called Early Church Documents, restricting it to the time period I find most interesting (prior to 150 A.D.) and made links to reformatted copies (with the HTML errors corrected) of the original links.
- The NJB Guide to Christian Resources - All the various kinds of internet locations of christian interest, divided into multiple files.
- The NJB Guide to Christian Literature - Ranging from Bibles to Devotionals to historical Sermons and creeds; a very comprehensive list. These links are divided into three sections (1, 2, 3)
- The NJB Guide to Services - made for ICLnet (The Institute for Christian Leadership) an affiliated group that supports their Web files. Has links to some of the other (above) documents, as well as some useful Bible Studies and FAQs.
- Creation Research Society - showing scientific evidence for creationism. Formerly part of the NJB site.
- Christian Classics Ethereal Library - Many historical books, as well as some useful reference tools:
- Christian Answers Network - a youth friendly site with a large database of biblical answers to questions about life and the Christian faith. While I can't say that the answers are always right, I will say that for the most part, they are accurate and helpful. Available in many different languages for non-English speakers. For a well-organized and thorough breakdown of the resources on this site, see the site directory.
- Kid Explorers main page - creation-focused (adventures in the rain forest), kid-oriented page with various activities, useful as a Christian education tool.
- Christian Spotlight on Entertainment - includes TV and movie reviews, entertainment news, online games, cartoons, and Christian music you can listen to.
- WebBible Online - red-letter King James Bible, cross-referenced with the answers database. There are also links to other translations, Bible search pages, and other Bible study tools.
- Grace Notes Home Page - a growing page maintained by Warren Doud, most notable because of its expository Bible studies (below), but also having a variety of articles in its topic library, including a few documents regarding American freedom, a couple of non-christian religions, and a few non-cannonical early church writings (for which you can find a more complete list in the NJB early church document guide referenced above)
Bible Studies
- The "EXECUTABLE OUTLINES" Series - a useful and growing set of Bible studies from a Conservative/Fundamentalist (Mainline Church of Christ) point of view. Alternate URL.
- Ray C. Stedman Reference Library - Expository studies of the Bible, including study of bible books, topical studies, and other sermons. Has some valuable insights.
- Bible Quiz Questions - recognition of quotes, stories, verses, people, etc.
- Jesus Answers - includes some topical Bible studies, Bible games and puzzles (on the difficult side), a children's area, and a message board.
- GCN Devotionals - daily and weekly Bible devotionals.
- Annie's Devotionals Page - A wonderful list of daily Bible devotionals from all over the Web.
- Daily Bible Reading - Has plans for different versions of the Bible (4 English, 2 Spanish) to let you study through the whole Bible in a year, and also has daily memory verses.
- Daily Bible Reading - Follows a plan to lets you study through the whole Bible in a year, but reading through a different portion of the Bible each day of the week.
- Grace Notes Home Page - summary under Multi-Resource Sites sub-heading, directly above this Bible Studies sub-heading.
Biblical Discussion Topics
- Bible Discussion and Sharing - My new site with forums for asking and answering questions about the Bible, sharing your favorite scriptures and parables, and recommending other christian Web sites.
- Issues That Make Christians Squirm! - discusses a number of challenges to christianity. A good section to start with is "It doesn't matter what you believe as long as you're sincere".
- Wittgensteins Net - a christian think-tank with many links to topics of interest.
- JoshuaNet Home Page - site dedicated to providing information relating to Christianity. Has some good articles, Bible studies, and a monthly Bible Quiz among other things.
- Countering Biblical Contradictions - addresses a list of 143 possible contradictions that were originally posted to soc.religion.christian - a newsgroup/forum.
- The Skeptic's Annotated Bible - KJV Bible, arranged by book, then chapter. If you're just looking to read the Bible on-line and glean its lessons, this is not the link for you. This KJV Bible has notes interspersed from a skeptic's point of view that highlights things that seem to be absurd, contradictory, cruel, or in some way not making sense from a non-believer standpoint. Many if not most of the contradictions asserted can be cleared up by looking at the verse in context. For example, when you look at Proverbs 26:4 and Proverbs 26:5 in context, it is merely telling you the consequence or result of whether or not you answer a fool according to his folly. Also, a couple of the contradictions have to do with problems in the King James translation itself, such as the mistranslation in Matthew 12:40 of fish as whale. If you have trouble resolving any of the questions posed and want help, you may want to look at the Countering Biblical Contradictions Web site right before this one. But, if you can stand a little challenge to your faith, this page gives you valuable insight into how some of your skeptical friends may view parts of the Bible, and also, this page highlights some interesting topics that are not as simple as we make them out to be or that we take too far, such as "Do not judge," whether we should let others see our good works, salvation by faith only, and whether christians should be concerned with material things.
- The Skeptic's Annotated Bible Discussion Board - a place to discuss and to interject feedback on the points brought up in the Skeptic's Annotated Bible (summary right above) as well as talk about related matters with skeptics of the Bible. You're free to quote not only from the KJV, but from any version of the Bible.
Minor Resource Pages
This section contains Christian Web sites that are organized into one main page, but
that are not extensive enough to fall into a "discussion" or "bible study" category.
- World Wide Christian Web - notable for Surf'n the Net section which highlights a christian site, Bible Q&A which presents a few interesting topics for thought, and Book Reviews which highlights a variety of books. See also the Intro Page, which has a link with a message especially for non-christians who are seeking to learn more about Jesus (available in text only format).
- The Chapel on the Web - a web page that aims to share the gospel both by apologetic material to help one come to belief in Jesus as the son of God and doctrinal material to explain actions and beliefs important in becoming a christian. I have disputes with crucial parts of the doctrinal material; however, it does represent common viewpoints. This site is extremely graphics intensive, so will take a long time to load. To save you some time, here are direct links to most of the sub-pages:
Miscellaneous Resource Pages
This section contains major Web sites on miscellaneous subjects that would be of
interest to spiritually minded people, but are not directly related to study of the
Bible or christian literature.
- The Secular Web - Athiestic/Agnostic group with some well thought challenges regarding christianity.
- BibleVerseArt.com - Many wonderful free on-line pictures representing or illustrating a superimposed Bible verse. Offers free Bible verse art wallpapers and screensavers for your computer, a variety of Christian comics, and evangelistic electronic cards.
- Revival Theology Resources Home Page - a philosophical discussion aimed at bringing someone to an intellectual decision to submit to God's authority. Contains articles on a variety of topics.
- All About Families - a weekly on-line newsletter that brings a Biblical perspective to character topics.
- Zondervan Religious News Links - comprehensive collection of religion news resources, including organizations and articles.
- All Creatures.Org - a Christian site that promotes vegetarianism. Has well arranged archives of discussions and articles of interest to Christians and vegetarians.
- MyZoe.org: my God kind of life - Offers free e-mail accounts (with spam-blocking), especially for Christians. Has a few Christian links as well and a search engine. If you sign up for an account, let me know how you like it.
Commercial
This section contains selected commercial Christian sites. We do not an aim to list lots of commercial links, but this section will serve as a limited space for a few nice sites in the commercial-only arena.
- Surf-in-the-Spirit - Commercial software that functions as a Christian Internet browsing companion, i.e. a library of Christian bookmarks. 30-day trial version available for download. (Virtual Christianity: Bibles was selected as one of their top Christian Web sites). Update (5/14/01): This site is now a Christian links directory with many categories, not a commercial site any more.
Real-Life Christianity
- The International Churches of Christ [official] - the family of churches that the editors of Virtual Christianity belong to; sometimes referred to as the Boston Movement. This site has information about the beliefs and history of the church, answers to frequently asked questions, information on charity efforts, a summary of missions work, news that highlights stories of interest from the church in different areas of the world, and a feedback page.
